Drs Mike & Opal Garman

Drs. Michael & Opal Garman’s story is a story of hope lost and found. Both went through years of pain and diminished health that no medication could relieve. But then they found Upper Cervical (UC) chiropractic care and got their lives back. Because of their transformational health journey, they understand and empathize with individuals at the end of their hope who come to them for help.

From 18 years of age, Dr. Opal had chronic pain. She took over-the-counter pain meds, and when these were no longer effective, at age 23 she went on prescription pain medicine and was contemplating a hysterectomy. But these meds too stopped working, and her pain was so excruciating, “I didn’t want to continue with life,” she said. “We’d moved to St.  Louis and I needed to go to the hospital.” She called a friend who lived there to find out which hospital would give the best care.

Instead, the friend took her to Upper Cervical chiropractors, “and the rest is history. When I got a correction, I got a 15-minute break in the pain level I had not been able to touch since I’d become immune to that prescription pain med. I knew at that moment that I’d found hope, not just for myself but for my mom and my sister who’d had previous hysterectomies, and for people who had no hope for their health conditions being turned around.” Dr. Opal said she knew she’d found an answer and resolved to stick with Upper Cervical chiropractic exclusively for her health, which also meant the cessation of all medications. “I haven’t taken anything, even over the counter. No Tylenol, no nothing.”

Dr. Michael's problems were allergies. “I was a kid who had to have allergy shots, had frequent ear infections, and just wasn’t healthy—I always had respiratory issues. I was allergic to shellfish and all kinds of things.”  After he began getting UC corrections, Dr. Michael says, “I was able to get rid of all his allergies, and now I can eat shellfish and the other foods I would react to.  My health has been changed, and I stopped taking allergy medication.”

“We haven’t taken any medication since 1995. Our children haven’t either—just because we didn’t need it,” Dr. Opal explained. “Our family’s been changed because of that. We manage our health and care through Upper Cervical.” The Garmans have six children, including two biological, two adopted, one foster, and a young woman they took in to live with the family.

Both doctors are licensed general chiropractors and had benefited from general chiropractic care themselves, achieving more mobility, but the adjustments never touched their serious health issues. They knew Upper Cervical was the gold standard to give to others. “I just knew this was just bigger, that what God had given was not for me to get better, but He intervened in my path because there was a bigger purpose for other people.”

Consequently, they pursued years of highly specialized training and became qualified to perform a variety of UC techniques, such as Blair, Knee-Chest and Orthogonal.  “We wanted to be the best in the Upper Cervical fields. It’s a difficult technique that takes years to master and involves a lot of mathematical application. To understand it and be able to do it takes a lot of time and dedication and skill. We wanted to give our patients the best of the best.”

But Dr. Opal takes no credit for the healing she witnesses daily among her patients. She’s quick to say, “God’s the healer. I’m not the healer. I have training and education. Knowledge is one thing, but to allow God to use us as His vessels and to be able to incorporate that into care comes into the fact that I know where the healing comes from.” Prayer is incorporated into their practice on every level.

“God designed our bodies to heal themselves,” Dr. Opal said. “I believe He designed them to heal without medication. And I believe healthcare should be built on that truth. I stand against the lie that our bodies were destined for disease. That’s our mission statement, and that statement is behind the story of how I got my health back.”

Fun Facts: Dr. Mike loves reading about old West history and Dr. Opal loves to hike.

Laurie West, RN & Wellness Coach

Laurie says, “When you combine Upper Cervical care with healing foods for your health, you can go to unimagined levels.” This is great news for people who suffer from painful, serious health conditions unresolved by traditional medicine and who find themselves at the dead end of despair.  She’s seen remarkable transformations in clients who’d given up hope but got their lives back by following her protocols of natural whole foods, essential oils and supplementation while continuing Upper Cervical treatment.

She cites the case of a friend, 62, who was mostly bedridden with chronic pain, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and other debilitating symptoms. “He was on a ton of pills.” Within six months of following Laurie’s guidance joined with Upper Cervical care, “Clifford dances every weekend, does karaoke, is off 100% of his medications and lost 30 pounds.”

Laurie knows firsthand what it means to lose hope. From age 42, she suffered from unexplained joint and muscle pain and severe neurological fatigue. And as a nurse of 16 years at the time, she said, “I knew how we run to western medicine. ‘Just give me a pill. Fix it so I can get on with my life.’” But nothing helped. Mainstream doctors “had nothing to offer me.”

At her lowest point, Laurie gave up and gave it to God.  This led her to the missing piece—a regimen of healing foods she learned about from a highly rated educational podcaster.  She followed his recommendations and immediately (and at last!) started feeling better.  Drs. Opal and Mike noticed her profound improvements and invited Laurie to come alongside their practice to help members find better health through her nutrition-based modalities. Since 2018, she has been helping people reclaim the health they lost through no fault of their own and to flourish in ways they never dreamed possible during the hopeless years.

Laurie will take the time needed to learn all about your health concerns and explain in simple terms the steps to take for transformation. And that is Laurie’s passion: seeing lives transformed.

Fun Fact: Laurie will dance to anything!

Rebecca Hawthorne, Craniosacral & Functional Bodywork Therapist

“I’m passionate about what I do because I see the difference it makes. It’s helping people who feel that there’s no hope left.” This seismic shift from hopelessness to renewed health brings Rebecca joy and personal satisfaction. She gives God the credit for the amazing outcomes Upper Cervical Chiropractic of Tulsa (UCCT) members experience under her care in tandem with Upper Cervical Chiropractic. Rebecca is a lifelong learner as a result of being told that the symptoms she experienced in her late teens, including digestive issues, fatigue, motion sickness, and inflammation—were all in her head. She was “completely hopeless.” She began researching holistic options and found some relief in implementing them. But then she started having neurological issues and was referred to Dr. Garman. “I’d never been to a chiropractor before and felt nervous about going.  But when I walked in for my first appointment, all my nerves completely disappeared. That was pretty amazing, especially after all the doctors I’d seen in the past and how cold they were.” She saw both doctors and “had amazing results.”

Rebecca was hired to work the front desk at UCCT in 2018 and continued getting adjustments. Then in 2022, during a class at the Ankrum Institute, she had “a huge neurological episode where I basically couldn’t move.” At her teacher’s urging, she went to the hospital where neurologists concluded from MRIs that she had multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that attacks the neurological system. “Studying at the institute reaffirmed even more that I was at the right place because we work directly with opening up those neural pathways of the spine.”

Drs. Michael and Opal recently asked Rebecca to provide craniosacral and functional bodywork services to members. At the first appointment, she watches how they walk, which reveals a lot of what’s going on, and she tests all parts of the body, then customizes treatment based on the person’s background, symptoms, and dysfunction.

Rebecca chose one example out of many to illustrate the effectiveness of her treatment. As with most of her patients, the gentleman she helped was a UCCT member who’d been undergoing Upper Cervical care for low mobility and lower back pain, “He started getting better but hit a plateau. So he made an appointment with me.” After nearly two months of treatment, his mobility improved so much “that now he jumps off the table whereas before he could barely get onto it.

Fun Fact: Rebecca loves to cook.

Holly Alcott

(Pronounced Wawn-der-ful-per-sawn)

Holly's background revolves around financial investing, with all the fun and stress that comes with that field. Upon her decision to retire, an unexpected opportunity arose when Drs. Michael and Opal extended an invitation for her to work in a place of healing—a place she loves. The positive work environment made a remarkable difference in her life. Her responsibilities encompassed greeting patients, scheduling appointments, managing phone calls, and fulfilling any other necessary tasks.

Her greatest achievements in life centered around raising her two wonderful sons, Joseph and Jordan. They, in turn, blessed her with four grandchildren who brought pure joy and laughter. The fact that all of them lived within a mere four-mile radius was a dream come true, allowing her to relish the closeness of her family. Above all else, her most significant life decision involved cultivating a profound relationship with God. In the face of life's challenges, her unwavering faith enriched her existence, making it truly fulfilling.
